Storing hydrogen  [ Return towards  Hydrogen energy  ]

Air Liquide is developing appropriate hydrogen storage solutions to ensure that vehicles have sufficient range.

 Air Liquide has played an active part in the European Research program StorHy which involves a number of car and components manufacturers and leading European research centres. Acting together, they were able to push research forward and accelerate the development of three main hydrogen storage technologies:

• storage in a gaseous state at high pressure (up to 700 bars);
• storage in liquid form at very low temperatures;
• storage in solid hydrogen-retaining materials (hydrides etc.)

   The efficient and safe tanks that have been developed are now ready for batch production, so that they can be built into vehicles.

The Group’s technicians have also developed tanks for storing liquid hydrogen at -253°C. They weigh only 66 kg and can store up to 12 kg of liquid hydrogen, i.e. 15% by mass, a world record! This tank would allow a car powered by a fuel cell to travel for more than a 1000 km
