High purity acetylene purifier - Pure-aC  [ Return towards  Electronics & Optoelectronics  ]

On line acetylene purification for applications of high purity recommended by Applied Material.

Pure-aCTM purifies acetylene by eliminating all traces of the solvents used to stabilize the acetylene in its packaging. This equipment has been developed for advanced applications using PECVD and the APFx product range from Applied Material.

Pure-aCTM is the Air Liquide solution for purifying acetylene particularly for micro-electronics applications and more particularly for the deposition of amorphous carbon by PECVD as employed in the new APFx processes from Applied Material.

Because of its unstable nature, acetylene is often packaged in solution in a solvent (acetone, DMF). Not only does this give a “stabilized” product but one which can be made available in large quantities. However, when the acetylene is dispensed, a more or less large proportion of the solvent is driven into gaseous phase with potentially dramatic consequences for some manufacturing processes in the semi-conductor industry. It therefore has to be purified beforehand.

Pure-aCTM basically comprises two specific purification cartridges, a regeneration system and an electrical control unit.

Pure-aCTM operates fully automatically with 3 operating modes for switching from one purification cartridge to another:

  • Purification: the acetylene containing the solvent passes through a purification cartridge at ambient temperature where the solvent is trapped.
  • Regeneration: since the adsorption effect is cumulative and reversible, when the cartridge is saturated, it can be fully regenerated by heating at 100°C. Regeneration occurs automatically at fixed intervals.
  • Stand-by: between the end of a regeneration phase and a purification phase, the system is on stand-by, ready to purify.

Key benefits

  • High putity acetylene: Pure-aCTM removes the bulk of the acetone used in packaging the acetylene
  • Automatic purification: purification is fully automatic and continuous switching from one cartridge to another and regenerating the saturated adsorbent
  • Regenerative system: the adsorbent is regenerated by re-heating the hot nitrogen thereby removing the trapped impurities.
  • Low oprerating cost: Pure-aCTM operates at ambient temperature during purification and only needs heating during regeneration phases. Using dissolved acetylene packaging also obviates the need to supply high purity low pressure acetylene with the resulting frequent cylinder changes that would be required for this type of demanding application
  • Safety: the system has been thoroughly evaluated in HAZOP studies and by applying the TRAC construction rules specific to acetylene. It also has safety systems at its disposal such as UV/VIS detector, PARE-FLAMME, SPRINKLER
  • Exclusive recommendation by AMAT: Pure-aCTM has been approved and forms part of Applied Material’s "Best Known Methods’’ (BKM) guaranteeing the effectiveness of APFx equipment. Pure-aCTM is therefore an indispensable solution!
