Cryogen free lab cryostats  [ Return towards  Cryogenic laboratory equipment  ]

Samples cooled without cryogens

These cryostats have a built-in pulse tube cryocooler so that temperatures can be achieved of between 2.8K and 300K.

(© Air Liquide / Photo Patrick Avavian)The system consists of:
• A vacuum specimen carrier, its temperature regulated between 2.8K and 300K. This is very easy to access and generously designed so that it can accommodate any sample type.
• A cryostat that can incorporate up to 4 removable windows for different observations
• A 50-80K radiation screen surrounding the specimen carrier
• A feedthrough for the specimen carrier instrumentation
• A temperature regulator (BT500 or the like)
• A pulse tube cooler with water- or air-cooled compressor

Key benefits

  • Safety: no handling of cryogens and elimination of associated risks
  • Reduced operating costs: the infrastructure and logistics related to the storage, distribution and consumption of cryogens is replaced by electricity consumption
  • Simplified implementation: straightforward start-up and turnaround procedures, much reduced training
