Pure gas generating unit for the Charles-de-Gaulle [ Return towards  Aircraft-carrier  ]

Oxygen and nitrogen generating unit for the Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft-carrier

Air Liquide is manufacturing the on-board oxygen and nitrogen generating unit on behalf of the DCNS for the French aircraft-carrier Charles-de-Gaulle.

Oxygen and nitrogen are vital gases for pilots in flight, for the on-board hospital, for aircraft equipment services etc. They are usually generated or stored on all aircraft-carriers cryogenically. Now, with the success of OBOGS and OBIGGS, the French Navy has opted for gas separation at ambient temperature using molecular sieves and membranes so that these pure gases can be generated on board the aircraft-carrier Charles-de-Gaulle. The volume taken up by a system of this kind can then be divided in three compared with a cryogenic unit.

Air Liquide expertise

This oxygen and nitrogen generating unit was manufactured between 1994 and 1996, and then installed in 1998.
Since 2001, the unit has fully proved its worth: on each mission, it generates in total reliability over 300 m3 of 99.5% pure gas (150 m3 of oxygen and 180 m3 of nitrogen).

As far as oxygen is concerned, to get from 95 to 99.5 %, a second molecular sieve stage, a compressor and a heat exchanger had to be added. This complete loop, duly validated and patented, needed 6 months work in itself.
